
Counseling is provided by a counselor and chaplain. Additional off-campus services are available with referral.
Each Cadet is assigned a faculty adviser who is responsible for monitoring student academic progress. Advisers have daily contact with the students during study hall and communicate with parents on a regular basis by phone and email. An annual survey including a questionnaire about the school will be distributed to parents by the advisers.
St. John's Military School registrar duties are administered by the school secretary. The Associate Dean of Academics in conjunction with the Academic Dean assists in making final decisions with regard to transfer and withdrawal grades.
Requested by either the student or the teacher, tutorials are available before the regular school day begins, providing one-on-one assistance for students needing help in specific areas of study Tutorials are mandatory for students with D and F grades.
Students are assigned to a study session with their faculty adviser as the eighth period of each school day. Study sessions are small with numbers ranging from 4-7 Cadets per adviser. Advisers monitor academic progress and provide assistance.
Provided during the week by the military staff, evening study hall is optional for students maintaining A's, B's or C's and mandatory for those struggling academically.
In core classes of reading and math, struggling students are identified and provided the opportunity for extra assistance by enrolling in an additional applied course. These Double-Dose classes, aligned with the core class, provide repetition and reinforcement in order for the student to have more opportunity to grasp the concepts. The Double-Dose classes are very small and allow a great deal of one-on-one time with the teacher.
In order to gain high school as well as college credit in mathematics and language arts, concurrent college courses are offered for high academic achievers. Students may earn up to 12 college credit hours.
SJMS implements a high degree of academic technology, including a 14-machine computer lab, a 10-machine library lab, a 15- laptop mobile lab, a 15-Apple Macbook mobile lab, an 8-machine applied technology lab, and a 6-machine art/photography lab. In addition, each classroom is equipped with an LCD projector to facilitate use of computer technology and internet resources in the curriculum.
Academic achievement is of the utmost importance since many of our Cadets have not been successful in a typical public school setting. As a result, our system is designed to constantly monitor struggling students. A weekly eligibility report is printed showing students with D's and F's and is directly related to weekend privileges and athletic participation. Faculty advisers also assist in monitoring students' grades. Parents and students have online access to current grades.
Students of serious academic concern are provided an individual conference with teachers, their adviser, and the Academic Dean to establish a plan of redirection for academic progress. Parents can be included via phone conference and are provided feedback, including an action plan for improvement.
Academic incentives include: Blue Beret, National Honor Society, Dean's Honor Roll, Honor Roll, President's List, Academic Achievers, and course awards. Additionally, an incentive program has been implemented to reward students who "Meet Standards" on the state assessments.
SJMS competes in varsity/junior varsity sports including football, cross-country, basketball, wrestling, tennis, and golf. Participation is based on academic eligibility.
Students not participating in organized KSHSAA sports are required to participate in intramural activities organized and supervised by the military staff.
As a boarding school, SJMS acts as surrogate parents to the Cadets. In the absence of immediate family, SJMS fills this void through Mom and Mr. Mom's Club. Each Cadet is "adopted" by a staff member who recognizes important events such as birthdays and holidays.
Cadets can participate in various clubs and activities throughout the year which include Marching Band, Color Guard, Drill Team, SCUBA Club, and Boy Scouts. Opportunities exist for Cadets to take part in cultural trips to Washington D.C. and New York City. Community service projects are also available to Cadets.
The St. John's Association facilitates communication between school and parents. This organization also assists with fundraising for specific projects.
St. John's wants to keep Old Boys affiliated with the school to continue valued traditions. The St. John's website allows all alumni to keep in touch with others who are currently attending or have attended the school. An Old Boys' Association, The Skirmisher magazine, and the Mule-Skinner Campaign for Excellence all contribute to the success of the Alumni Association.
