Futsal
Futsal is an indoor version of soccer that was invented in Brazil. It uses a weighted, low-bounce ball and is played on a basketball court with field hockey size goals. The Keeper is allowed to use his hands inside of the 3-point arc, and all in-bound plays are kick-ins not throw-ins. The game stresses ball control, field awareness, and quick movements. Soccer players are able to work on all of their outdoor skills except slide tackles which are a foul in Futsal.
St. John's Military School runs the Futsal League for the city of Salina through the Parks and Recreation Department. Games are played on Saturday afternoons in January and February. It is an excellent venue for those players wishing to improve their skills during the cold winter months. Additionally, Futsal helps all athletes to maintain their cardiovascular fitness through the off-season.
