OverviewAs a school founded by Episcopal Bishop Elisha Smith Thomas, religious training and education has been an essential piece of the St. John's experience. The founders believed that a solid religious foundation was necessary in order to build the moral and ethical character that must be required of any sound educational endeavor. Hence, spiritual growth is one of the key values of St. John's.
Spiritual growth means first that St. John's cadets hear and learn the stories about God who has created all that we see, revealed God's self to a particular people and fulfilled his promises to those people in Jesus the Messiah. It is in and through the hearing of those stories repeated in daily chapel and study that cadets have the opportunity to know God and in so doing opens them to true spiritual growth which enables them to become the moral and ethical people they are meant to be.
To help with this process each cadet participates in religious services which are held in the campus chapel. Cadets attend services several times during the week, in addition to Sunday mornings. Services held at St. John's are geared toward participation. Cadets not only attend, but are also active in a variety of ways throughout the services. Participation coupled with support and direction helps cadets to gain a better understanding of the Christian approach to the role of God and religion in their lives. Young men of all traditions live and participate together at St. John's.
